3d cad zbrush

Got a few people on work not selecting a set but the objects and ending with an empty folder:evil:. What am I overlooking, or is there a way of importing in a complex Maya model and separating the individual pieces within ZBrush for better texture control, etc. Any help would be appreciated - I know others have bumped into this issue as well.
